Friday Night Visiting
Every
Friday night, the Apostolic Singles Group, also known as the young group, is
invited to come and spend some time singing and fellowshipping with the elderly
whether it is at a nursing home or at somebody’s house. We call this visiting
since our goal is to visit those who may not be able to get out or who have lost
a spouse. (James
1:27)
In Acts 6, the
early Church was struggling with filling the spiritual needs of their widows.
So they set seven men over this task. We, though there are more than seven of
us, try to give the widows, widowers, or shut-ins a spiritual boost when we go
sing to them. It is both a blessing for them and us.
This part of our outreach has grown. Many Friday nights, we
get a total of thirty young folks as a minimum. We get calls asking if we will
come back, we have the residents of the homes thank us for being there, and
more. The benefits we receive from simply giving an hour of our time for others
are so numerous and so special. The best way to experience these blessings is to
come and taste and see what it's like.
The singles group enjoys these visitings and we love singing.
The residents show their gratitude toward us after we finish for the evening.
The songs and age-old hymns, we sing, touch a chord in their heart from their
childhood and mean so much to them. (Ephesians
5:19,
Colossians 3:16) The songs also touch our hearts as well. So the visitings
are a double benefit.
Another wonderful aspect of visiting is this: Many that we
sing to are so full of wisdom and experience, that a great deal can be learned
of them if we will just listen to what they have to say. (I
Timothy 5:1-3) So many times it is easy to think that our wisdom will help
us solve our problems. If we would but turn to those that are our elders
though, we would probably be able to make a wiser decision by listening to what
they think or have experienced.
This is what visiting is all about. It is a time when our
singles group can get out of its comfort zone and share a blessing with those that
are of a different age range. All in all, it is a blessing for everybody
involved.
